In 1991, GEO began expanding our industry expertise internationally; and quickly became a world leader in the provision of corrections, detention and rehabilitative services within Australia, United Kingdom, and South Africa. Utilizing our successful operations and management model in place in the US, GEO developed a similar customized program encompassing local, regional, and national standards.
Australia
Our foundation in global operations began in 1991, when GEO expanded its correctional services through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Australasian Correctional Management Pty Ltd – now known as The GEO Group Australia Pty Ltd. (GEO Group Australia). Since our first contract in 1991, we’ve expanded our services to provide for finance, design, construction, and operational support to minimum, medium, and maximum security correctional, remand, and transitional living facilities for state agencies.
In addition to offering correctional/detention services, in the late ninety’s, GEO Group Australia diversified its operations further to provide clients with primary healthcare services for state prisons, through Pacific Shores Healthcare; and escort and custody services for court and hospital appointments. Through the establishment of these programs GEO Group Australia provides clients with a comprehensive service platform that addresses the state’s correctional and detention challenges.

United Kingdom
In 1994, GEO entered the correctional services arena in the United Kingdom through a joint venture to form, Premier Custodial Group Ltd. The cooperative enterprise provided clients with prisoner transportation, court custody, home detention services, and correctional and immigration detention services. After eleven successful contract awards and operations, by mutual agreement, the joint venture was discontinued.
In 2004, GEO formed its independent subsidiary The GEO Group UK Ltd. (GEO UK). Headquartered in England, GEO UK was established to support industry opportunities in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Continental Europe. This market represents the second largest private correctional market in the world. GEO UK provides solutions for a wide range of services including Prisons, Immigration, Youth Justice, Police, Community-Based Intervention and Facilities Management Services.

South Africa
Pursuant to our qualifications and success in partnering with governments in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, GEO was invited to participate in a partnership program in the Republic of South Africa. The purpose was to provide the public with cost-efficient and effective prison services and to provide offenders with proper care, treatment and rehabilitation. As a result, South African Custodial Management (SACM), the operating arm of South African Custodial Services (SACS), was formed as a joint-venture partner. Established in 1999, SACM has become the solution for the government of South Africa in their search for cost-effective and affordable remedies to their ongoing detention needs.
SACM was awarded and currently operates one of two prisons developed under the public private partnership program in South Africa. Adhering to the specification of high standards established by the Department of Correctional Services SACM has instituted our ‘best practices’ to deliver secure facilities, quality services and rehabilitation. SACM provides economic stimulus through its substantial investments in the local economy and provides support in terms of empowerment of previously disadvantaged populations.
